North Kern State Prison (NKSP) is investigating an attack on a correctional officer on Oct. 28.
At approximately 8:52 a.m., an officer was monitoring dayroom activities in Facility D when an incarcerated person approached her from behind and wrapped his arms around her neck, restricting her airway. Other incarcerated people intervened, pulling his arms away from the officer’s neck and forcing him to the ground.
Responding staff placed the incarcerated person in handcuffs and escorted him to a holding cell. He was medically evaluated, and no injuries were identified. The incarcerated person was later re-housed in a restricted housing unit.
The officer was taken to the institution’s Treatment and Triage Area before being transported by ambulance to an outside medical facility for a higher level of care.
No staff sustained serious injury. The officer was treated and released and appropriate follow-up action was taken.
NKSP’s Investigative Services Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.
