CDCR Checks on almost 1,400 Sex Offenders during Operation Boo

Sweep results in more than 70 arrests statewide; weapons, drugs and pornography confiscated

SACRAMENTO – California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) parole agents arrested more than 70 of the 1,377 sex-offender parolees and other offenders who were contacted during compliance checks or searches as part of the 24th annual Operation Boo Child Safety Project on Halloween night.

“Our heartfelt thanks go out to about 400 of our parole agents and nearly 150 local law enforcement partners, who gave up family time to help ensure that California’s children enjoyed a safer trick-or-treat experience free from sexual predators,” said Jerry Powers, Director of the Division of Adult Parole Operations.

New felony and misdemeanor charges were filed against nine of the sex-offender parolees contacted. Pornography was confiscated from 10 of the parolees checked on Halloween night. Fifteen parolees in Northern California were caught with weapons. Two parolees at large were also arrested. The violations statewide included 36 parolees who were not in compliance with their conditions of parole.

Operation Boo also offered a free downloadable brochure. The Parent’s Guide has information to keep your children safe all year.  It features these components:

  • Not Just Stranger Danger: Approximately 80 percent of sexual assaults against children 12 and older are committed by someone they know. CDCR listed several website locations with age-appropriate tips for parents on how to talk to children about dangerous behaviors by any adult, not just strangers.
  • Parent Empowerment: The guide also offers links to important tools to help keep children safe, such as the Megan’s Law website that helps the public pinpoint where sex-offenders live in California communities so children can stay clear of them. The information can be found yearlong at
