Prescribing and Dispensing Medications within Corrections: The Role of Health Information Technology

GOING TO A PHARMACY AND FILLING A PRESCRIPTION IS NOT AN UNCOMMON EXPERIENCE. THE PROCESS OFTEN BEGINS WITH A VISIT TO A PHYSICIAN OR URGENT CARE CLINIC.  WITHIN THE CORRECTIONAL ENVIRONMENT, THIS PROCESS, LIKE MOST, BECOMES FAR MORE COMPLICATED. IN MOST CASES, INCARCERATED PEOPLE CANNOT DECIDE ON THEIR OWN TO CONTACT THEIR PRIMARY CARE PROVIDER, RECEIVE A PRESCRIPTION, HAVE IT FILLED AT THE LOCAL PHARMACY, OR EVEN ADMINISTER THE MEDICATION THEMSELVES. THE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ENTIRE PROCESS.
