To honor new warden, woodworker crafts rocking chair

Incarcerated woodworker and his instructor present a rocking chair to the new warden at CSP-Corcoran.
Cedrick Taylor, left, crafted a rocking chair to honor newly appointed CSP-Corcoran Warden Tammy Campell. Looking on is Taylor's instructor Jimmy Shubin.

Cedrick Taylor used his woodworking skills to craft a rocking chair in honor of the new warden.

Taylor, currently assigned to Vocational Building Maintenance at California State Prison, Corcoran, wanted to do something special.

With approval from instructor Jimmy Shubin, he designed a rocking chair in recognition of newly appointed Warden Tammy Campbell.

Later, they achieved their collaborative goal and presented the chair to Campbell for use at the institution.

Shubin has worked at CSP-Corcoran for a number of years, teaching woodworking skills to his students while also instilling life skills.

Taylor also built another adult rocking chair and a children’s rocking chair, both of the same design.

“I would like to build more children’s rocking chairs so that they can be donated to children in need,” said Taylor, hoping one can be donated to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera.

The hospital is a regular recipient of the institution’s charitable donations from food sales and events such as CSP-Corcoran’s first cancer walk.

The rocking chair is proudly displayed in the Warden’s Office area.

The rocking chair, enjoyed every day by a variety of staff and guests, serves as a reminder of the positive results of the rehabilitative programs at CSP-Corcoran.
