Five dogs complete training at Corcoran

Dog-training program with an incarcerated trainer demonstrating skills the dog has learned at California State Prison, Corcoran.
Demonstrating their skills were five newly trained dogs at their graduation from CSP-Corcoran. The dogs come from a shelter and given a second chance at life thanks to incarcerated trainers.

California State Prison Corcoran (CSP-Corcoran) hosted a June 6 graduation for five dogs completing an eight-week training program. It’s a program of second chances for the dogs as well as their incarcerated trainers.

The program is a collaboration between Paws Estate Rescue and Shelter and CSP-Corcoran. Through an application and vetting process, the trainers and a backup are selected.

The rescue shelter is a dedicated organization providing a second chance to homeless, abused, and unwanted dogs by giving them much-deserved care, training, and love.

The dog-training program features incarcerated trainers working alongside the dogs, teaching them essential skills and behaviors. This collaboration benefits the dogs as well as having a profound impact on the trainers. According to the trainers, they say the program offers them a sense of purpose, responsibility, and the opportunity to make a difference.

The program has created an inspiring and nurturing environment within the prison, fostering compassion, patience, and empathy among the incarcerated persons and staff.

The graduation was a moment of pride for the trainers who shared their experiences. With staff, family, friends, and shelter volunteers attending the ceremony, the dogs demonstrated the results of their training.

“I didn’t think these things were worthwhile, but they are,” said one of the trainers. “They make a big difference. If you go on the yards and see individuals (from the program), they’ve changed. It’s changed the whole scenery”.

While the dog program at CSP-Corcoran is about training dogs, it is also about transforming lives and building a brighter future.
