Valley State Prison (VSP) recently welcomed probation and education leaders on tours to learn more about rehabilitation efforts.

The two groups came from across California to learn how rehabilitative programming can foster successful reentry into society.

During one visit, representatives from the Los Angeles County Probation Department and Santa Monica College toured VSP’s innovative barbershop program. The group was greeted by staff and program leaders who provided an overview of how the barbershop operates as a vocational training space and a platform for personal growth. The barbershop is a modern and professional learning environment inside the institution. It has become a model for teaching practical trade skills while also reinforcing discipline, responsibility, and customer service.

While touring the facility, the visiting representatives engaged directly with the incarcerated students enrolled in the barbering program. Students spoke openly about their experiences in the program. They described how learning a trade has helped them regain confidence and envision new opportunities upon release. The group also met with the program’s principal and instructors. They discussed the curriculum, instructional structure, and the tools and techniques used to ensure students receive industry-relevant training.

The visit provided valuable insight for the Los Angeles County Probation Department and Santa Monica College. They are exploring the possibility of establishing a similar cosmetology and barbering training program within their own systems.

Sacramento County Probation, Education leaders tour VSP

On a separate comprehensive tour, VSP welcomed representatives from the Sacramento County Probation Department and the Sacramento County Office of Education. Their visit included an in-depth look at several of VSP’s rehabilitative and vocational initiatives. These programs are designed to prepare incarcerated individuals for successful reintegration into their communities.

The Sacramento delegation toured VSP’s reentry program, where participants receive guidance and resources to help prepare for life after incarceration.

They also visited the dog-training program. Here, incarcerated handlers work with dogs in a structured training environment to foster responsibility, patience, and teamwork. The group continued through the Division of Rehabilitative Programs (DRP) educational classrooms and multiple vocational training spaces.

One of the highlights of the visit was a tour of VSP’s state-of-the-art barbershop, where the Sacramento group met with incarcerated students, instructors, and the program’s education leadership. Much like the earlier visiting group, the Sacramento representatives were eager to observe how the barbering program functions as a structured educational pathway. They asked questions about curriculum development, certification processes, equipment management, and the impact the program has on student engagement and rehabilitation.

Program participants, staff welcome tours

Throughout both visits, VSP staff and program participants welcomed the guests with professionalism and enthusiasm. The tours provided an opportunity for meaningful dialogue about the importance of vocational education in correctional settings and the role these programs play in reducing recidivism and supporting successful reentry.

By sharing its experiences and program structure, VSP hopes to help other agencies develop similar opportunities for justice-involved individuals. The visiting probation and education departments left with valuable insights and practical ideas they can take back to their respective jurisdictions as they work toward establishing cosmetology and barbering training programs within their own departments.

The visits highlighted the power of collaboration between correctional institutions, probation departments, and educational partners. Sharing knowledge and innovative programming can create new opportunities for rehabilitation and community reintegration, according to VSP organizers.
