Richard J Donovan Correctional Facility (RJD) staff participated in the annual San Diego 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. The Aug. 31 event saw 29 RJD staff firefighters, custody, medical, and their family members climb stairs to raise funds for the 9/11 Memorial Firefighter Aid.
In all, the RJD efforts raised $10,700 for the charity, the third highest donation for the event.
RJD staff climbed to represent Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon.
“RJD Fire thanks all those who donated and participated to show love and support for all the service members who gave their all on Sept. 11, 2001,” according to a statement issued by RJD.
In all, 781 climbers registered for the event. According to the event website, over $55,000 was raised by multiple organizations.
According to the event, “we climb to raise awareness of sacrifices made by firefighters everywhere. Each year, approximately 100 firefighters die while serving their communities.”
