The Office of Victim and Survivor Rights and Services (OVSRS) attended the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims.

The event was hosted by the Sacramento Chapter of Parents of Murdered Children (POMC). Held at Sacramento’s Howe Community Center, the event brought together families and supporters to honor loved ones lost to violence.

“I’m very thankful that OVSRS is invited to POMC’s National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims event. It gives those who provide support and services an opportunity to see a victim through their loved one’s eyes. (It) brings the human perspective to the forefront,” said Patricia Roy, restitution analyst for OVSRS. “The photos and shoes at the event were tender remembrances of missing loved ones. (They are also) a valuable reminder of why survivors’ voices need to be heard. I’m honored that we are included in this very special and solemn event.”

Honoring loved ones lost to violence

During the event, POMC presented a remembrance bench, symbolizing the lasting impact of victims’ lives. Many speakers shared stories, offering a glimpse into the pain and resilience of families who have experienced the tragic loss of a loved one due to violence. A powerful display of shoes and photos paid tribute to those who are no longer with us, each shoe representing a life taken too soon.

OVSRS’s commitment to supporting victims

OVSRS staff provided information about California’s constitutional rights for victims, answered questions, and shared resources. Staff provided information about the services available through CDCR and partner agencies. Their attendance reaffirms OVSRS’s commitment to supporting victims and their families with compassion and understanding.
