Perfect weather greeted custody and non-custody staff gathered at Avenal State Prison for the annual Veterans Day Walk/Jog/Run event.

Leading the way were several veterans including Correctional Officer J. Meno, a Marine Corps and Department of Defense veteran, who expertly organized the group into military formation at the starting line.

As participants made their way around the grounds, they chatted with veterans, learning about their service and experiences.

“Let’s remember our veterans and renew our commitment to them and their families.”

Meanwhile at the administration building, they were welcomed by the Coalinga High School Band.

The Avenal State Prison color guard presented the colors as the band played the “Star Spangled Banner.”

Inspiring speeches followed from administrative staff and veterans representing all branches of the military. The band then played the Armed Forces Medley.

Jeffrey Blain, a vocational electronics instructor and 20-year retired Navy veteran, delivered a heartfelt message.

“Today, let’s remember our veterans and renew our commitment to them and their families, ensuring we continue to live in freedom,” Blain said.

Lt. Jamie Jacquez, a 12-year Army veteran, echoed Blain’s sentiments.

“Honoring veterans is more than just words,” Jacquez said. “It’s about supporting their transition home, ensuring they have the resources they need to rebuild their lives, and standing with them, as they once stood for us.”

The focus then shifted to Sgt. Rudy Cortez, who led the Marine Corps Birthday cake-cutting ceremony.

Officer J. Meno explained the tradition: “The first slice goes to the oldest Marine here, followed by the youngest, symbolizing the passing of knowledge, experience, and traditions from one generation to the next.”

The event concluded with cake and continuing conversations with veterans.
