CDCR welcomes 142 new correctional officers

CDCR academy graduation of 142 new correctional officers.

CDCR welcomed 142 new correctional officers after graduating the academy at the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center in Galt Friday, Feb. 21.

This latest class, 2-25B, represents a significant step forward in CDCR’s ongoing efforts and focus on recruitment, hiring, promotion, retention, and culture through collaboration of diverse and qualified candidates.

Marking the occasion, family and friends attended the graduation ceremony to cheer on their loved ones stepping into their new careers.

California Medical Facility acting Warden Sircoya Williams delivered the keynote address, welcoming the 142 new correctional officers.

“As you find your footing in your new roles and go through different phases of this upcoming journey, remember that you are not alone. You are part of a team,” said Williams. “Look at all your partners around you. You all have a special bond through this experience and some of them will last a lifetime.”

Forty-four of the graduates are women, highlighting the strides being made by CDCR to achieve the “30×30” pledge to have women make up 30 percent of correctional officer cadets by 2030. Following their graduation, officers will serve in institutions throughout California.

“I’m proud of myself for finally doing something for me,” said new officer Joanne Arvizu. “I’m excited for what’s ahead and for the future my son and I will share.”
