Beyond the Badge, Rehabilitation

Retiring officer thanked at SQ Armed Forces Day

San Quentin Rehabilitation Center proudly hosted its Armed Forces Day celebration in Chapel B on Friday, May 30. The gathering included 100 incarcerated veterans and special guests to honor the spirit of service. It also served to mark the retirement of education Officer R. Goss, who has served with dedication and compassion.

Incarcerated individuals recognized Officer Goss for his respectful and humane approach. “He always treated us like human beings,” said the incarcerated people in attendance. His retirement was met with heartfelt appreciation from the San Quentin community.

The event opened with a presentation of the colors by the San Quentin Veterans Color Guard. This solemn and proud moment invited reflection on the collective contributions of veterans behind the walls and beyond. For many, the color guard presentation served as a powerful reminder of personal growth, resilience, and ongoing commitment to positive change.

The celebration featured guest speakers, entertainment, and a shared dinner. The event was a tribute to military service as well as an opportunity for the veterans’ group and community to come together in fellowship and gratitude.

“Veterans at San Quentin have much to be thankful for,” said a group representative. “The Armed Forces banquet gives us a chance to recognize each other’s efforts and to express appreciation for those who continue to support and uplift the veteran community inside and outside these walls.”

Events like these reflect San Quentin’s mission to foster respect rehabilitation and community.
