OPEC TV director Scott Sabicer retires

Scott Sabicer retires after 21 years of service to CDCR. He's shown as a young man to current.

Scott Sabicer, a longtime CDCR photographer and TV director, has retired after more than 20 years with CDCR.

Sabicer began his career in broadcasting after graduating college in 1978. His state career began later at the Employment Development Department.

“In 2004, positions became available within corrections (so) I moved over. First, we were in the training center in Galt. I was a TV specialist amongst the four of them all together,” Sabicer recalls. “About 13 years ago, the position of director became available. I interviewed and was able to get the position.”

Throughout his state career, he’s seen shifts in technology as well as locations. Starting in Galt, the video unit then moved to the S street location in Sacramento.

“We had a studio and had branched into move live streaming at that time,” he said.

In late 2024, the video unit and the rest of the Office of Public and Employee Communications (OPEC) relocated to Elk Grove.

Sabicer visited many institutions

“I’ve been to several of the institutions up and down the state, but not all of them. We’ve recorded things as simple as B-roll or stock footage (to interviewing) several different division folks or different programs at institutions,” he explained.

He said he has many fond memories of the people he’s worked with over his two decades of CDCR service.

“I hope that my presence can bring a smile to someone’s face or confidence that what we’re going to talk about is going to have a resolution,” Sabicer said.

How does he want his time at CDCR to be remembered?

“I hope I’m remembered for someone who could solve problems and get things done,” he said. “But also, you know, shared some moments that were fun and interesting. People know what I did and enjoyed doing it with me. That would be the best pay off at this point.”
