CCI bids farewell to retiring Warden Brian Cates

California Correctional Institution (CCI) at Tehachapi said farewell to Warden Brian Cates during a special gathering held Dec. 19, 2025.

Retiring CCI Warden Brian Cates holds a senate resolution honoring his retirement.

Cates has worked for department since July 22, 1997, when he attended the Basic Correctional Officer Academy.

After graduating, he promoted through the ranks at CCI, Wasco State Prison-Reception Center, and North Kern State Prison. He later returned to CCI to complete a 28-year career as warden.

Cates has been a correctional officer, correctional counselor I and II, classification and parole representative, associate warden, chief deputy warden and warden.

“Cates’ dedication to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and his unwavering commitment to his craft are evident in his proactive efforts to provide opportunities for both staff and the incarcerated population,” according to CCI. “His retirement marks the end of an era, and his contributions will have a lasting impact on the department. Congratulations on completing an impressive 28-year career.”

According to prison officials, he has been an integral part of the institution, as well as a mentor.

“You have left a resonating path in the wake of your tremendous success. Thank you for your service. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement,” according to the institution.

Cates is looking forward to spending time with his family, grandchildren, traveling, and participating in golf tournaments.

The new acting warden is Thomas Valdez.
