Staff and community partners gathered at Calipatria State Prison for a solemn National Crime Victims’ Rights Week ceremony.
The April 20 gathering highlighted the enduring impact of crime and the importance of victim advocacy.

Domestic violence survivor Griselda Partida courageously shared her personal journey through trauma, resilience, and healing. Her story underscored the lasting ripple effects of crime on individuals and families. She also offered a message of hope and strength.
“Today’s event reflects the power of connection, education, and purpose,” said Partida. “When individuals are given the tools, support, and awareness, real change begins. (Change) not only for them, but for their families and future generations.”

Gina Vargas, executive director of WomanHaven: A Center for Family Solutions, emphasized the critical role of victim support services. She stressed the need for continued collaboration between institutions and community organizations to ensure survivors are heard, protected, and empowered.

Acting Warden Ernesto Bustamante concluded the ceremony by reinforcing the institution’s commitment to accountability, rehabilitation, and restorative justice. The address highlighted the responsibility of correctional systems not only to uphold public safety but also to acknowledge and honor the voices of victims.
According to organizers, recognizing victims’ rights is essential to fostering empathy, promoting healing, and building safer communities. Through shared stories and collective reflection, the event reinforced the importance of advocacy, awareness, and action.
