CALCTRA celebrates 56 graduates at CCWF

A milestone achievement was celebrated at Central California Women’s Facility (CCWF) in Chowchilla as 56 graduates completed the California Correctional Training and Rehabilitation Authority (CALCTRA) training programs. Graduates earned industry recognized certifications and/or apprenticeships in Healthcare Facilities Maintenance (HFM), Optical, Dental, and Pre-Apprentice Carpentry.

CALCTRA Director Suzie Changus addressed the graduates, offering encouragement and recognizing their accomplishments.

“I want to applaud you all. You are sitting in this room today because you earned it,” said CALCTRA Director Suzie Changus. “Today we get the opportunity to recognize you in front of your peers, family, mentors and friends for the discipline, dedication and hard work you have put towards achieving your success.”

The graduation ceremony brought together graduates, families, staff, and supporters to recognize the hard work and dedication demonstrated by the women throughout their training.

CCWF acting Chief Deputy Warden Stephanie Torres also shared a few words at the ceremony.

“Today marks a joyous occasion, your graduation and investment in yourselves and your futures,” said Torres. “These CALCTRA programs are so meaningful, and these experiences you can carry with you when returning home. This is just the beginning of your careers and of your continued investment in yourselves. Congratulations.”

Former graduate shares story of hope

Vera Marin, a former CALCTRA graduate, shared her reentry story with the program graduates.

Former CALCTRA graduate Vera Marin returned to CCWF to share a powerful and personal message at the celebration.

“Today is a huge accomplishment, congratulations to each and every one of you,” said Marin. “The certificate you are receiving today is not just a piece of paper. It is an opportunity for you to take advantage of. This isn’t the end (bur rather) just the beginning. When you reach those gates, the sky is the limit.”

Marin graduated from CALCTRA’s Pre-Apprentice Carpentry and Construction Laborer programs at the California Institution for Women at Corona. When she returned to her community over a decade ago, she was hired through the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters which is now the Western States Carpenters Union. She has worked for the Carpenters, climbing the ranks to foreman, project engineer, and now project superintendent for a large construction firm in Southern California.

“This is an honor for me,” said Marin. “To come here and encourage you and remember where I came from. There are so many opportunities out there and the path is yours to take. Take advantage of it. Your past does not have to determine your future.”

Having a CALCTRA graduate return to speak at a graduation creates a unique connection for those still preparing for their own transition. Marin spoke openly about her own experiences and challenges she faced. She also emphasized the importance of taking advantage of opportunities for the future. Her story provided graduates with a firsthand example of how the skills developed during incarceration can become a foundation for success after release.
