31060.8.2.1 Required for Peace Officers

  • No person shall be appointed or begin training as a peace officer until an Office of Peace Officer Selection (OPOS) physical fitness/abilities test has been completed, or a qualification under an approved U.S.United States military fitness waiver has been obtained, a background investigation, medical examination, and psychological screening have been completed, and written clearance has been received from the Chief, (OPOS) or designee.

    • Exceptions:

      • Correctional Officer candidates are the only peace officer classification required topass the OPOS physical fitness/abilities test or qualify under an approved U.S.United States militaryfitness waiver.

      • A background investigation is not required if the applicant is:

        • A peace officer currently employed by the department.

        • Being appointed by mandatory reinstatement to a peace officer classification.

        • A retired annuitant who will be performing in an administrative capacity only.
