Thanks to the generosity of a park ranger, 50 tickets to tour Alcatraz were offered to San Quentin Rehabilitation Center staff.

In June, Associate Warden Eric Patao coordinated a staff appreciation drawing for a chance to receive donated tickets.

The park ranger said the tickets are meant to recognize the hard work and commitment of San Quentin Rehabilitation Center staff.

Team building while boosting morale

With the support of Warden Chance Andes and Chief Deputy Warden Oak Smith, they held an enter-to-win drawing for staff. The management team drew the winning names. On the day of the tour in early August, Patao went to Pier 33 in San Francisco, the Alcatraz Landing, to personally hand out tickets to staff.

The event created such a buzz, with staff eager to participate and share the experience. Selected staff enjoyed a memorable day of fun, exploring the infamous prison and learning about its rich history. Outings like this foster camaraderie among co-workers while also serving as a meaningful reward for their dedication and hard work.

Staff were very appreciative as most had never visited Alcatraz Island before. This was a great opportunity for them to see the prison across the bay.

AW Patao said he enjoys showing appreciation to staff and the administration plans to continue recognizing staff.

Did you know? Alcatraz and San Quentin are forever linked. The first warden of Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was longtime San Quentin Warden James Johnston, also known as the “reform warden.” Under Johnston, many changes were implemented at San Quentin during a period of prison reform.
