San Quentin hosts first all‑incarcerated softball game

California Medical Facility in Vacaville transported a team of incarcerated individuals to San Quentin Rehabilitation Center to compete in an incarcerated versus incarcerated softball game.

This was the first time such a game was ever played.

Incarcerated thank administration

“We’d like to thank the administration for letting us have this opportunity and having trust in us to travel,” said incarcerated person Nathan Turner.

Staff from California Medical Facility made the Oct. 11 trip to San Quentin to support their institution’s team. Senior management from both facilities also attended the event, including Warden Chance Andes and Warden Daniel Cueva.

“No one comes to prison on a winning streak. What we’re doing with these teams is allowing people to join something larger than themselves,” said Jeremiah Holland, head coach of the California Medical Facility Athletics.

The San Quentin Giants ultimately won the softball game, beating the California Medical Facility Athletics 24-15.

The following day, staff from both institutions gathered at Al Patch Park in Vacaville to compete in two softball games. California Medical Facility staff avenged their institution, defeating San Quentin Rehabilitation Center staff in both games.
