CDCR recruiters took part in a unique event featuring student athletes at Sacramento State University. The Peace Officer Recruitment Unit participated in the inaugural Hornets in Action mock interview event hosted by the university’s athletic department.

This event provided a unique platform for CDCR to connect with aspiring professionals, particularly student-athletes, and showcase the rewarding career opportunities within the department.

Hornets in Action mock interviews prepare students

CDCR, along with 10 other local business representatives, participated in the event, where they engaged in mock interviews with more than 30 Sacramento State University student athletes.

Sgt. Chuck Thorntona, a former Sac State football star, and Sgt. Jeffery Gubac, a respected local youth coach, proved to be the perfect recruiters for this event. They brought a unique perspective to the interviews, resonating deeply with the student athletes.

“Having a former student-athlete and a coach conduct the interviews was invaluable,” said Danny Royster, CDCR Recruitment Analyst. “It allowed us to connect with the students on a personal level and emphasize the transferable skills they possess – teamwork, discipline, high-pressure performance – all crucial for success as a correctional officer.”

The mock interviews provided a valuable learning experience, offering students insights into professional interview etiquette. The interviews also demonstrated the importance of clear communication and confident presentation. Following the interviews, students were registered for an upcoming CDCR Virtual Career Fair using Peace Officer Recruitment Unit tablets.

This successful collaboration between CDCR and Sac State athletics demonstrates the department’s commitment to reaching out to diverse talent pools. By leveraging the unique skills and experiences of student athletes, CDCR continues to build a highly qualified and dedicated workforce.
