Pelican Bay State Prison welcomes staff families

Pelican Bay state prison welcomed staff families to a special event to learn more about the prison and the jobs their loved ones do inside the walls.

Pelican Bay State Prison invited all staff and their families to participate in a special family day.

This initiative began in January 2025, initially offered to new custody and non-custody staff and their families. Due to its popularity, the program expanded to include any staff member and their loved ones, creating a unique opportunity to connect and foster a sense of community.

This provides an interactive way for staff and their families to engage with the Pelican Bay State Prison community to better understand the institution and the work taking place within the walls. These events help bridge the gap between the prison environment and the staff’s personal lives, fostering a stronger sense of connection and shared purpose.

The event began with Field Training Sgt. T. Thornhill welcoming everyone to Pelican Bay. Warden Stephen Smith and area managers then provided insights and advice to staff and their families.

Various committees were also on hand to explain how they assist staff. The Personnel department addressed questions about available benefits and insurance plans. Meanwhile, representatives from the California Correctional Peace Officers Association answered questions about their role in representing members. The Pelican Bay Honor Guard discussed their activities as well, explaining how staff could join their team.

A highlight of the day was a presentation by retired Correctional Sgt. Scott Cupp, who offered valuable advice on financial literacy. He talked about the benefits of starting savings accounts and managing personal investments for future financial security.

Peer Support Team members were also present, providing information about resources for staff while also distributing pamphlets.

Families and staff learned about Crisis Response Teams, including negotiations and tactical teams, and how to become involved.

The Investigative Services Unit (ISU) and K-9 unit provided demonstrations, talking about their daily activities and the opportunities for staff to join their teams. Additionally, families received information about local activities, dining options, schools, medical and dental offices, as well as other valuable community resources.

To round out the day, families were treated to a staff-prepared barbecue lunch.

The event concluded with approved family members taking a guided tour of Pelican Bay State Prison. According to organizers, this event reinforces Pelican Bay State Prison’s commitment to supporting staff and their families.
