Stephen Tennell, a retired correctional sergeant, passed away Sept. 8, 2025. Sgt. Tennell worked for the department for nearly 23 years.

He began his career with the department in November 2002 as a cadet at the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center. After graduating the Basic Correctional Officer Academy in March 2003, he reported to San Quentin as a correctional officer.
Demonstrating leadership and dedication, he promoted to correctional sergeant in June 2013.
Tennell retired from San Quentin in March 2022.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” according to the institution.
