PORU, SRU visits East Bay criminal justice students
The CDCR Peace Officer Recruitment Unit (PORU) and Specialized Recruitment Unit (SRU) attended California State University East Bay’s Criminal Justice Meet & Greet.

The event brought together law enforcement agencies and public safety departments to connect with college students exploring careers in those fields. PORU and SRU teamed up, engaging directly with criminal justice majors and undecided students.
The combined units provided information on CDCR pathways, hiring timelines, academy expectations, and the essential role correctional staff play within the state’s public safety network.
“Engaging with students at CSUEB allows us to highlight the diverse opportunities within CDCR and build meaningful connections early in their career journey,” said Recruitment Analyst Inderpal Dhaliwal. “Events like this help strengthen our recruitment efforts and ensure CDCR remains visible alongside other law enforcement partners.”
PORU hosts monthly booth at Alpine Hall

CDCR’s PORU hosted their monthly booth event at Sacramento State University’s Alpine Hall. The hall, conveniently located outside the university’s Criminal Justice Program, allowed PORU continue to build a strong and active presence on campus.
CDCR recruiters interacted with students interested in public safety careers, offering insight into the peace officer hiring process, training expectations, and the endless opportunities available within CDCR.
Students stopped by in between classes, asking questions, gathering materials, and learning how CDCR aligns with their academic and career goals.
“Our partnership with Sac State’s Criminal Justice Program is invaluable,” said PORU Manager Danny Royster. “Being present here allows us to connect with motivated students who are preparing for careers in law enforcement. These interactions help us build genuine interest and strengthen our recruitment pipeline.”
This outreach effort reflects the department’s ongoing partnership with Sac State’s Criminal Justice faculty and student organizations. CDCR recruiters have consistently been welcomed as a trusted resource for career guidance and professional development at the university.
PORU hits the court at SJSU
PORU continued its Northern California outreach initiatives with a focused effort at the San Jose State University basketball game. The PORU team connected with students, alumni, and local residents exploring careers in public safety.

The game, held at the Provident Credit Union Event Center, provided strong visibility and opportunity for CDCR recruiters. They were able to highlight correctional peace officer roles to a broad and diverse campus audience.
CDCR recruiters offered attendees an overview of the hiring process, academy training, professional development opportunities, and long-term career stability. Foot traffic remained consistent, with many individuals interested in pursuing a meaningful, service-driven career path.
“San Jose State continues to be an excellent location for meeting motivated students who want to serve their communities,” said Recruitment Analyst ThaiHang Le. “Engaging with students in this environment allows us to answer questions in real time.”
PORU staff supported attendees with on-site sign-ups, recruitment materials, and application guidance tailored specifically for prospective correctional peace officers.
Recruiters hit Bay Area job fair

CDCR recruiters participated in the Work for California Bay Area Winter Job Fair in San Jose. Hosted by CalHR, the event received over 700 attendees.
CDCR recruitment staff connected with potential candidates, sharing information about the variety of career opportunities available within the department. Attendees lined up to learn about the many career paths, including custody and non-custody positions, the department has to offer.
Recruiters visit Fresno State

CDCR recruiters continued outreach efforts at California State University, Fresno, through monthly tabling sessions. This ongoing presence on campus has become a reliable point of connection for students. It’s also a key component of the recruitment unit’s strategy to strengthen interest in correctional careers throughout the Central Valley.
Support from the Office of Peace Officer Selection’s Central Unit found correctional sergeants and parole agents strengthening these efforts.
Their on-the-ground presence provides students with broader insight into correctional operations, community supervision, and the diverse career paths available within CDCR. By returning each month, the recruiters have built familiarity with Fresno State’s campus community. This allows students to revisit the booth for updated information, follow-up questions, and guidance on the peace officer application process. The regular interaction has also helped PORU stay visible to criminal justice majors and related programs who frequently pass through the area.
Recruitment Analyst Inderpal Dhaliwal emphasized the importance of this ongoing collaboration.
“Our monthly partnership with Fresno State plays a major role in helping us reach talented candidates in the Central Valley,” Dhaliwal said. “Being here consistently allows us to build trust with students and makes it easier for them to explore CDCR careers with confidence.”
