Kern Valley State Prison (KVSP) Correctional Officers Jim Rhyu and Alexander Klopfenstein were recognized March 27 for a recent heroic act.
The officers were assigned to medical transport at an outside hospital on Friday, Feb. 27.

While the officers were at the hospital’s emergency room, an unknown male suddenly ran down the hallway. Holding a knife, he was behaving in an erratic and threatening manner. Without hesitation, both officers immediately took decisive action to protect hospital staff, patients, and members of the public.

Their swift response, sound judgment, and coordinated efforts effectively quelled the incident and prevented potential harm. The officers-maintained control under pressure and handled the situation with a high level of professionalism.
“Officers Rhyu and Klopfenstein’s actions reflect great credit upon themselves and the department. Their vigilance and willingness to act decisively in a rapidly evolving situation exemplify the standards expected of correctional peace officers,” according to KVSP executive staff.
