The Honor Guard from Calipatria (CAL) and Centinela (CEN) State Prisons participated in the Imperial Valley Law Enforcement Memorial.
The community, officers, and local leaders gathered May 1 to honor the service and sacrifice of 49 law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The ceremony served as a moment of reflection and unity.
CDCR honors those who gave everything
CDCR acting Associate Director for Region IV Rafael Acevedo emphasized the enduring impact of those who served. He also highlighted the responsibility carried forward by those who continue to protect and serve. His message underscored the importance of remembrance, resilience, and community support of law enforcement families.
“At the Imperial Valley Fallen Officers Memorial, we gather to remember (and) honor lives defined by service beyond self. We stand in gratitude for those who gave everything,” Acevedo said. “(They) answered the call with unwavering courage and (their) absence is felt in every quiet moment left behind.”
He explained words aren’t enough to describe the loss families feel.
“For the families, this sacrifice (is) lived every day,” he said. “It is carried in the silence at the dinner table, in the milestones missed, and in the strength required to move forward.”

A particularly moving moment of the ceremony was the flag presentation by a multi-agency honor guard team and CEN acting Chief Deputy Warden Iainnardo Black. They presented the flag to CDCR/CCHCS employee Efren Obeso, brother of fallen CEN Correctional Officer Arnold Obeso, who passed away Jan. 4, 2009. The tribute symbolized honor and remembrance, acknowledging the ultimate sacrifice made by Officer Obeso and the legacy he leaves behind.
This annual event pays tribute to the fallen while reinforcing a collective commitment by the Imperial Valley community to never forget their service, sacrifice, and families.
