CCI staff participates in high school career day

Staff from California Correctional Institution (CCI) recently participated in the annual Tehachapi High School career day, giving students a firsthand look at CDCR careers.

Representing CCI were custody staff and medical personnel. The team set up an interactive booth and held Q&A sessions with students exploring post-graduation options in Tehachapi and Kern County.

CDCR is more than a uniform

For many students, it was their first direct conversation with correctional professionals who live and work in their community.

“Most students think CDCR is just one job,” said Sgt. Joshua Jelleschitz. “We were able to explain how CCI is really a small city within city of Tehachapi. While we have correctional officers, we also have teachers, nurses, psychologists, electricians and plumbers. If you want to serve your community and stay in Tehachapi, there are hundreds of opportunities about 20 minutes away from the high school.”

Students asked about day-to-day life inside the institution, hiring requirements, salary and benefits, the academy process and how staff balance service with family life.

“Overall, career day was another absolute success. CCI is proud to share the unique perspective with the future work force. Thank you, Tehachapi High School, for inviting CCI back to Career Day, and allowing us to develop these unique community relationships,” the institution wrote.
