Joseph Chavez, a maintenance mechanic at Avenal State Prison, passed away June 27, 2025. Services are planned for July 10.

Chavez began working for the department as a mechanic at Avenal State Prison in May 2023, where he remained until his passing.
“He touched the lives of many, fostered strong relationships as both a dedicated colleague and a friend, was respected, admired, and loved by his work family. Joseph is survived by his wife, Lucero Mendoza. His presence will be greatly missed,” according to the prison.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m., July 10, at Living Christ Church, 2516 M St., Tulare.
Burial services immediately follow at Tulare Public Cemetery, 4572 North J St.
A reception will follow at the Portuguese Hall, 515 North I St., in Tulare.
